Was Job’s Wife Really Foolish to Ask if God Is Good? Trusting God When Life Is Hard

Was Job’s Wife Actually Foolish?

Faith built on fear of punishment breaks. Faith built on the real God doesn’t.

There’s a woman in the Bible who has been called foolish for centuries because of one sentence she said after watching all ten of her children die. I don’t see her that way. I walked away from God for a lot less. This week we’re looking at her honestly, and at what your own faith was actually built out of.

Before we begin

Think back to the hardest thing you’ve walked through. What did you believe God was doing in it at the time?

This week’s scripture
“His wife said to him, ‘Are you still maintaining your integrity? Curse God and die!’ He replied, ‘You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?’”
Job 2:9-10 (NIV)
“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”
James 1:17 (NIV)
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
Psalm 34:18 (NIV) · go deeper

Ground yourself in His WordWhat does the passage actually say?
Job’s wife never got to read chapter one. Neither did Job. They didn’t see Satan standing in front of God asking permission. They only saw ten children buried and a life stripped down to nothing. We get to see behind the curtain they never had pulled back. Satan struck the blow. God set the limits. And James 1:17 tells us what actually comes down from the Father: every good and perfect gift. The hardship was never the gift.
Read Job 2:9-10 again, knowing what she didn’t know. What changes about how you hear her? What does James 1:17 say about where your own hardship actually came from?
R
Return to Him in prayerBring it honestly
Job lamented. He was angry, he was in despair, and he said all of it straight to God. At the end, God didn’t rebuke Job for that. He rebuked Job’s friends, because Job was the one who had spoken honestly about Him. Lamenting isn’t sin. Suppressing everything and pretending you’re fine isn’t faith.
What have you never actually said to God about your hardest season? Say it here. Anger, disappointment, the question you’ve been afraid to ask. He can hold it.
O
Open yourself to His presenceTake your time here
My faith didn’t fail because God failed me. It failed because the God I believed in was one I was terrified of, and terror can’t hold weight. I thought my son wasn’t healed because I hadn’t prayed hard enough. If Job’s wife believed something similar, then losing her children wouldn’t have looked like a test. It would have looked like a punishment. And you don’t run toward a God you think is punishing you.
What was your faith actually constructed out of? Love, or fear of what God would do if you got it wrong? And when things fell apart, did you assume you were being punished?
W
Walk it outOne small thing this week
Facing what broke your faith is the first step in healing with God. Your circumstances didn’t break your faith. They shone a light on what was already fragile in it. And Psalm 34:18 says the Lord is close to the brokenhearted, which means the place you were most sure He had left is the exact place He was standing.
Name the one thing that cracked your faith. Write it plainly. Then write one small way you’ll bring it to God this week instead of carrying it alone.
The heart of it
She wasn’t foolish. She was a mother who had just buried ten children and couldn’t see behind the curtain. God didn’t punish Job, and He didn’t punish his wife. He never once stopped being good.
Carry this with you: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18)
