Identify What You Were Taught to Believe
Not everything you inherited about God is scary. This step is about the part that is, so we can bring it into the light.
Some of what you were taught about God builds awe. Some of it builds fear, the kind that makes you want to hide instead of come close. This step is about finding that second kind. Not to relive it, just to name it clearly enough that Step 2.3 can answer it with truth.

Picture yourself at the age you first believed God was someone to fear. Write her a letter. Tell her what you know now, or what you’re starting to believe: that He was never the one to be afraid of.

We didn’t do this to relive the fear. We did it to see it clearly enough for God to answer it Himself in Step 2.3. He has never been who you were afraid of. This whole study exists to prove one thing: God is for you, not against you. He is good, and He has always been good.
Fear kept you at a distance for a long time. You just took a real step toward closing that gap. He’s not surprised by any of this, and He’s not going anywhere. Ash
