What Is Faith?
This study has three parts: what faith actually is, what Jesus tells us about it, and how Paul talks about living it out. None of it is meant to leave you feeling like you don’t measure up. Faith was never supposed to be a performance you’re failing at. By the end of this week and a half, the goal isn’t more pressure, it’s more joy, more hope, and more love, because that’s what real faith actually produces.
What Faith Is Not
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.”
2 Timothy 1:7Not one of these is what God actually asks of you. This study exists to replace the pressure of “not enough faith” with the truth of what faith really is: something you get to grow in, not a bar you have to clear.
Confidence and Assurance
“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”
Hebrews 11:1“Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.”
Romans 10:17He’s not asking you to fake certainty. He’s inviting you to get to know Him well enough to actually trust Him, the same way trust grows with anyone you love. Faith grows the more you hear His voice, not the more you force a feeling you don’t have.
Faith That Doesn’t Need to See Everything First
None of them had it figured out. Sarah even laughed at Him first. He wasn’t looking for perfect faith, He was looking for people willing to take the next step. That’s still true of you.
It’s Not About the Size
“If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
Matthew 17:20“Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed… I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.”
Matthew 8:8–10Jesus was amazed by a man who simply trusted His word was enough, not by anyone’s flawless record. Faith’s power was never in its size. It’s in who it’s aimed at.
Reaching, Not Earning
She thought, “If I just touch his cloak, I will be healed.” Jesus said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.”
Mark 5:27–34“Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight.
Mark 10:46–52He didn’t require either of them to prove themselves first. Faith isn’t a performance that earns a response from God, it’s simply reaching toward Him. He meets you in the reaching, every time.
Doubt Doesn’t Disqualify You
Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
Matthew 14:29–31“Everything is possible for one who believes.” Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”
Mark 9:23–24He catches Peter before He ever addresses the doubt. He heals the boy in response to a prayer that admits unbelief in the very same breath as belief. Faith and doubt can live in the same sentence, the same prayer, the same you, and He still meets you there.
A Gift, Not a Performance
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast.”
Ephesians 2:8–9“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Romans 5:1You don’t have to perform your way into His approval. Faith is the open hand that receives what He’s already offering, not the grade you achieve.
Living It Out
“The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.”
Galatians 5:6“For we live by faith, not by sight.”
2 Corinthians 5:7Faith isn’t proven by having zero fear or doubt. It’s proven by continuing to love and trust even when you can’t see. That’s something you can actually do today, not a feeling you have to fake.
Faith, Hope, and Love, Not Fear
“And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”
1 Corinthians 13:13“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
Romans 15:13If your faith has been making you feel more afraid, more not-enough, that isn’t faith working right, that’s fear wearing faith’s clothes again. Real faith, the kind God actually asks for, overflows into joy and hope. It was never supposed to make you smaller.
Where Your Faith Is Now
Faith isn’t a test you can fail. It’s a relationship you get to grow in, one small trust at a time, and it’s already producing more joy, hope, and love in you than you probably notice.
You just spent ten days learning what faith actually is, not the version that scares you. That’s not small. I’m proud of you.
